The Reader's Café
Above Waterstones, 7 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. - 01 672 9932

Last Thursday, members of du food and drink were treated to lunch at the Reader’s café above Waterstones on Dawson St.  The café is bright and spacious, and decorated in a contemporary neo-Georgian style that compliments both the building itself and the modern classic cuisine on offer.

The menu features a great variety of European dishes, with a strong mediterrean influence, though there are many Irish classics to be had, albeit served with a modern twist.  The café serves everything from simple open sandwiches to hot and cold plates and salads. We sampled dishes from both the hot plates and sandwich side of the spectrum.

The ‘Penne Pasta with Organic Chicken’ was given the two thumbs up by our tasting panel; the sauce had a distinct edge that spiced up the entire dish. Taja’s ‘Potato Farls served with Portobello Mushrooms’ (suitable for vegetarians) were ‘delicious’. Other dishes sampled were ‘Buffalo Mozzarella Open Melt’ and the ‘Chicken, Smoked Bacon and Cheddar Quiche’ – they all surpassed our expectations and quickly disappeared. All dishes were served with a healthy side salad and garnish.

It was service with a smile for our entire experience. Our waiter was prompt and ensured all of our needs were catered to. The side board of cakes and pastries looked amazing however we had to get back to the stand to relieve the other committee members.

The Reader’s Café while not the cheapest student lunch in town it really packs a punch; and with your du food and drink membership card the price becomes comparable with many of the less reputable eateries in the city centre.
